Eva Veeder, my 3rd great-grandmother, was born 2 April 1761 and baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church at Caughnawaga, New York four days later on April 6th. Her parents were living in Schenectady when she was born, probably not far out of the town of Caughnawaga, which we know today as Johnstown, New York.
Her parents, Johannes Veeder and Catherine Mabie, were both of Dutch descent, their families among the early settlers who had established themselves in the Albany and Schenectady regions. Around 1750, Johannes Veeder purchased land just west of the Caughnawaga village, where they would raise Eva alongside her three sisters and four brothers.
In the summer of 2025 I completed and article for the Central New York Genealogical Society, Tree Talks publication, about Eva and family legends; it is not a thorough or complete essay on her life but covers many aspects of her life. The article, as it appeared in Tree Talks, titled, Family Stories: Legend or Fact? can be read here. My essay, without graphics, can be read here. Both are copyrighted, please feel free to use them giving credit to the author and publisher.
